Montauk Matt's Surf Fishing Report

Posted by Montauk Matt on

As of recent it has seemed that a larger school of bluefish have moved back into our local areas. Shinnecock, Moriches inlet as well as the bays have all seen fish in the mid teens. Topwater and bucktails are the way to go.
For fishing an inlet, be sure to have a heavy rod to help land these beasts. Besides the recently large bluefish, a few large stripers up to 30 pounds have been culled as well. Just like the bluefish, the stripers have been taking hold in the inlets. Bucktails with a curly tail or a pork rind is what you would want to use. A swim shad would be another good option after dark when the blues thin out.

I myself also was able to pull a few keeper fluke from the surf recently. I fished the moriched bay shorline area with bucktails and gulp. The majority of the fish were between 18"-19" With the recent full moon a nice sized body of fish have moved into our bays. Also ill add that ive had more luck on the outgoing tide instead of the incoming.
