This week has been very interesting on the surf front. Solid early morning fishing has been reported on our south shore beaches. Sandeels were seen just over the outer bars and on some occasions made their way close to shore and gave anglers some go chances at some nice bass and big bluefish.
The south shore bunker run countinues with many anglers catching fish over 40 lbs on live bunker. on the calmer days its very easy to pick out these schools because they will often be close to the surface. On the rougher days anglers rely on electronics to find the schools and have fish to over 50lbs. On some occasions the bunker made their way in close to shore and surf bound anglers had good shots at big fish. Darters and bottle plugs catch the majority of the Striped Bass feeding on these big baits. some of these bass reached upwards of 40lbs a monumental mark for anglers.
Day Trippers celebrating their holiday on the beach reported some striped bass taking clam with some nice keepers up to 15lbs. Hi-Lo rigs with clam will catch these bass on the beaches.
Fluke fishing was great this past week, constant action was reported with smaller fluke but some nice keppers in the mix upwards of 22 inches. The guys from the shop were out in shinnecock bay and put 9 nice keepers in the boat, they picked through fish around 16 inches all day with some nice keepers that topped out at the 25 inch mark.
Porgy fishing has been great as of recent. we've been having customers coming to the shop two times a day to restock on bait because the action is so good. anywhere from Port Jeff to Orient have seen some serious hump backs.
Crabbing is offically underway, with the 4th being most of the crabbers start date. we've seen some people leaving the dock with their buckets filled with blue claws!
While crabbing some are tossing out a bottom fishing rod with clam or squid and catching some nice kingfish, Fluke, and even reported some small Weakfish!
Snappers are still small but are in numbers which is a very good sign for upcoming weeks.
Largemouth Bass action was solid this week with the shops live shiners out catching most of anything. Doug, Anna and Ryan Young spent this past sunday fishing patchogue lake
with live shiners they picked up at the the shop and caught some very nice largemouth bass. the biggest they had was close to 3lbs! also they reported some nice chain pickerl falling to the shiners.
