Fishing in the Great South bay this season has been nothing short of fantastic. The past few weeks we enjoyed the best run of Weakfish in year's from Bluepoint to Sayville. Numerous fishermen came in with reports of landing 15-20 fish a trip. While most of the fish were smaller some fish in excess of 5 lbs. were landed.

Fishing for Blowfish and Kingfish this summer brought back memories for a lot of older fishermen, reminding them of their youth. Fishing only got better for Blowfish as we got later in to the summer and the size of the fish increased. Between the Blowfish, Kingfish, Snappers and Blue Claw Crabs the docks were a very busy place this summer.

That brings us to this week. In the past week we have had reports of Striped Bass blitzes off of Pine Neck Dock in E. Patchogue, Patchogue's Mascot Dock  in Patchogue and off of Sayville, Bluepoint and Bayport's Corey Beach is also doing great.. While most of the fish have been schoolies the action in the bay has been outstanding.

Anthony from the shop fished in his boat off of Blue Point with his first mate Morgan. They landed around 20 Bass to 27" in about a half an hour using 5" Pearl and Bunker colored Swim Shads.  ZMany many Patchogue locals fished  off of Mascot dock landed over 25 Bass using small popping plugs, he said he left the fish biting.

Larger Stripers have been reported on the Bunker Pods from Fire Island to Jones inlet. Diamond Jigs or ava jigs  and live Bunker have been acounting for most of the fish. Patchogue locals, Mark and Dan, landed Bass up to 40 lbs. while fishing the pods.

Blackfishing has also started off strong with the report of a 12 lb. fish being landed off of Cranes Neck on the North Shore. The fish was landed by a kayak fishermen using Green Crabs this past Saturday. As the water temps get cooler Blackfish as well as Black SeaBass should get more active with larger fish looking to feed.

The next time someone brings up fishing in the "Good Old Days" tell them to get out there now and enjoy it while it lasts.
