The Chilly Fishing Forecast 🎁 Holiday Gift Guide

Striped Bass fishing is staying strong along the south shore beaches. Smith Point is still loaded with fish up to 27" with a keeper mixed in every so often (28"). The main lures of choice are bucktails, diamond jigs (A-17T) and Hopkins lures. At night, a thin profile lure like the sp minnow are doing well. Using a teaser about 2 feet in front of your lure gives you a shot at a double header.

Some bigger bass seem to be holding in the bays around Smith Point County Park  and  Robert Moses State Park. Eels have been the bait of choice for these fish. Either drifting on a boat or casting from the shore into the deeper channels has had proven results. A teen sized fish is a "reel" possibility but we also heard of fish over thirty pounds being taken.

Quite a surprise this year is the fantastic Blackfishing that has been going on around Long Islands north and south shore. the north shore ( Brookhaven Fishing Piersof long island is doing quite well. Blackfish Jigs like JOE BAGGS TOGZILLA (LAY PERFECT) JIGS or JOE BAGGS BLACKFISH/TOG JIGS (2 PER PACK) BANANA STYLE have been hot with rigs doing well also. I myself have been experimenting with the jigs for great results. They are very easy to use. TIP: I direct tie my jig to 4 foot length of 60-80 pound leader material. When baiting a jig both a whole small green crab or a piece of a crab work. I do give the edge to the piece of crab though. It seems to give off more scent in the water. This can be beneficial if the fish are being picky, which Blackfish are know for. Although if they are feeding don't hesitate to put a whole crab on. My biggest fish of last week came on a whole crab on the jig.
